She wrote a shopping column for the Kansas City Journal in the early
1920s and worked for the Ferry Handley advertising agency. She
received a bachelor's degree in European cultural history from the
University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1963 and a master's degree in
art history in 1988, becoming the school's oldest diploma
